These resources support the vital transition from accurate decoding to fluent, expressive reading. Once students have mastered automatic word recognition with decodable books, the next step is to build fluency with expression, intonation, and prosody.

Featuring Readers’ Theatre scripts, fluency passages, varied short texts, beginner chapter books, extended series, and high-interest adventure stories, these collections give students repeated practice with connected text. Suitable for Years 1 to 3, they consolidate phonics knowledge while developing fluency, comprehension, and confidence—helping students move beyond decodable texts to more independent and enjoyable reading.

Fluency Fun Books from Little Learners Love Literacy

Fluency Fun helps students practise reading with accuracy, expression, and confidence. The varied and humorous texts are designed for partner reading and Readers’ Theatre, giving students repeated opportunities to develop fluency in an engaging way.

Each A4 book in the Fluency Fun series contains a wide range of decodable texts such as short stories, fluency pyramids, nonfiction snippets, quizzes, poems, songs, tongue twisters, dialogues, playscripts, and comic strips. The series is aligned with the Little Learners Love Literacy® sequence and is designed for use in Year 2 classrooms.

Act it Out - Readers' Theatre from Decodable Readers Australia

Readers’ Theatre helps students build fluency, expression, and comprehension while having fun. By reading aloud with intonation and confidence, students practise accuracy and prosody without the need to memorise lines or use costumes.

Each boxed set in the Readers’ Theatre series contains 10 short decodable plays, each with two characters and a narrator. The wipe-clean A4 dry-erase boards come in sets of three copies per play (30 boards in total), making them ideal for small-group practice in Year 1–2 classrooms.

Act it Out - Readers' Theatre Pack

The Act It Out – Readers’ Theatre Pack is a great classroom fluency resource.

Each pack contains one or four boxes of the scripts for Levels 4 to 8.  The scripts can be used in groups or as a classroom activity. There are 10 scripts in each level.

Fluency Passages from Decodable Readers Australia

Time to Shine Fluency Passages make phonics-based fluency practice fun and motivating. Each passage is designed to give students targeted practice as new graphemes are introduced, helping them build decoding automaticity and confidence with freshly learned content.

Each A4 dry-erase card includes two passages: one simpler with lower word count and complexity, and one slightly more challenging. This means students of different abilities can practise the same phonics focus. Through repeated readings, students can track their progress. The wipe-clean format makes the cards reusable for regular classroom practice and are great for use in Years 1 and 2 classrooms.

Decodable Chapters from Decodable Readers Australia

These books will be great for all ages! They all have fun and engaging plots filled with action and suspense.  The simplicity of the text and layout make them perfect for struggling older readers as well as young readers ready for their first chapter books!

Dragon Eggs Readers and Workbooks from Phonic Books

The Dragon Eggs Series helps students consolidate their phonics knowledge and develop fluent, confident reading through engaging chapter-style stories. Each book focuses on a target phoneme and provides practice with a wide range of spellings, allowing students to strengthen their reading while enjoying imaginative narratives.

The series contains 10 titles, each designed to provide rich opportunities for practising fluency with connected text. By offering extended reading at the phonics focus level, Dragon Eggs supports students who are moving beyond beginner decodable readers and working towards greater independence and fluency.  This series is ideal for  Years 1 or 2 students.

Readerful Rise Oxford Series

The Readerful Rise books are a series of Hi-low books, perfect for students aged 7-11 who need to consolidate their decoding skills and work on their fluency with phonically controlled text. These books are designed specifically for older students still working on mastering the phonics code but with age-appropriate themes and content. The series include both fiction and non-fiction texts to keep students engaged and allowing them to build their knowledge and vocabulary.

The books feature vocabulary lists and comprehension questions to ensure that students are getting the most out of every reading experience. Higher level texts feature a read aloud playscript or poem. The playscript can be read with a partner to help with fluency and motivation.

Use these readers for in class consolidation during independent reading, for fluency practice or part of an explicit intervention program.

Hero Academy Independent Reader Pack from Oxford University Press

The Hero Academy series combines exciting adventure stories with carefully sequenced phonics practice, helping students develop fluency and confidence as they transition beyond decodable texts. The books feature diverse characters, engaging plots, and dynamic illustrations that motivate students to keep reading.

For this Independent Reader pack, SPELD NSW has selected the higher levels of the Hero Academy series. These titles include a wide range of spellings for different phonemes, making them ideal for students in Years 2 to 3 who are consolidating their phonics knowledge, building fluency, and preparing to move off decodable readers.

Novastar Fiction and Non-Fiction Packs

NovaStar is an engaging, research-informed reading series for Years 3 – 6 designed to support teachers in developing students’ language comprehension, knowledge building and reading for enjoyment. NovaStar supports the explicit instruction of language comprehension, integrating background knowledge, vocabulary and comprehension strategies.
NovaStar can be used across middle and upper primary, with 60 titles best suited for readers aged between 8 and 10 years, and 60 titles best suited for readers aged between 10 and 12 years.

Sunshine Phonics Reading Adventures

Eight easy to read, graphic novel style decodable chapter books to build reading confidence. These books are light on text and big on humour and engaging characters and stories. Reading Adventures consists of two, parallel, four-book series.

Catch Up Fluency Readers

These resources are designed for students in Years 2 to 8 who are struggling with reading and need targeted support to catch up. Against The Odds from DK

Against the Odds combines gripping historical fiction with decodable storytelling—perfect for older students needing both fluency and phonics reinforcement. These Hi-Lo chapter books retell survival stories inspired by true events, crafted to engage readers aged 10–14 with motivating, real-world themes.

Each title features decodable text enhanced by a focus on morphology—the study of prefixes, suffixes, and word roots—which strengthens decoding, spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The accessible format helps bridge the gap between decodable and mainstream reading material.

Fox Kids Books and Workbooks from Little Learners Love Literacy

These fast-paced, graphic-novel-style decodable chapter books are crafted specifically for struggling readers in Years 2 to 4 who may have missed key phonics instruction.

The series includes multiple titles along with companion reading and writing workbooks and card games, all following the evidence-based Little Learners Love Literacy® 7-stage explicit teaching sequence. Each book builds cumulatively on students’ skills, while the supporting resources reinforce comprehension, spelling, and fluency.

Fresh Start Anthologies from Read Write Inc.

Fresh Start Anthologies provide older students with engaging, age-appropriate texts while consolidating their phonics knowledge. Designed for students in Years 4 to 6, these full-colour, magazine-style anthologies offer motivating reading practice for those who need to catch up on essential code knowledge and fluency.

Each anthology contains a lively mix of non-fiction, poetry, fiction, quizzes, playscripts and comic strips, giving struggling readers regular opportunities to practise fluency while building confidence and enjoyment in reading.

Sound Out Non-Fiction Decodable Readers

The Sound Out Non-Fiction series makes informational text accessible and motivating for struggling readers. Aimed at students in Years 3 to 6, these books combine high-interest topics with decodable text to build decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension.

InfoMAG books feature around 15 short passages in formats such as e-mails, blogs, menus and idioms, supported by lively graphics and a 75% decodability ratio. City Secrets, X Sports and Cool Rides share facts and history in short, complete sentences. Each book includes lists of fully decodable story words and high-frequency words for reinforcement.
