This course will explain how dyslexia can impact on maths attainment and how the strengths of the dyslexic learner can be harnessed to support maths attainment. We will look at the role of working memory and processing speed in maths as well as the impact of reading issues when working with word problems.

This short course explains the importance of using a wide range of manipulatives when teaching maths. The specific manipulatives covered in the session are Cuisenaire rods, two-coloured counters, ten frames, base ten materials (MAB) and Numicon.

It looks at the unitising principle, confusion over 'tens', ‘teens' and ‘ty’, and the importance of zero. The course ends with an explanation of the Gattegno chart and links to decimals and percentages.
