SPELL @ SPELD NSW Launch
Give every child the strongest possible start in reading, spelling and writing.
Launch is the Kindergarten entry point into the SPELL @ SPELD NSW structured literacy program.
Launch is a complete, evidence-informed structured literacy program for Kindergarten (Foundation) and intervention. It integrates phonics, spelling, morphology, handwriting and reading fluency into one connected program that is easy for teachers to implement and engaging for students to learn.
Designed around the SPELD NSW Phonics and Morphology Scope and Sequence, Launch provides everything teachers need to deliver explicit daily literacy instruction with confidence.
Why schools choose SPELL-Launch
Unlike many programs that focus only on phonics, Launch develops all of the essential foundations of literacy together.
Students learn to:
- Read words accurately
- Spell words accurately
- Develop fluent word recognition
- Build automatic handwriting
- Understand early morphology
- Apply their learning in writing
Everything works together, every day.

More than Phonics
Launch combines five essential components of early literacy.
Phonics: Students explicitly learn grapheme–phoneme correspondences and develop accurate decoding and encoding.
Spelling: Students immediately apply new learning through spelling, dictation and cumulative review.
Morphology: Students begin learning how meaningful word parts work through plurals, past tense, continuous tense and other early morphemes.
Handwriting: Letter formation is taught alongside phonics instruction so reading, spelling and handwriting develop together.
Reading Fluency: Students participate in daily word reading and sentence reading practice designed to build automatic word recognition and confident readers.

About SPELL @ SPELD NSW Launch
The Launch program follows the SPELD NSW Phonics and Morphology scope and sequence, with careful attention to spaced practice and consolidation. All elements work together to deliver explicit teaching, abundant opportunities to practise, and the repetition required to build accurate, automatic word reading. Encoding and spelling are integrated throughout so that students develop strong early writing skills alongside decoding.
We take an integrated approach across Phonics, Handwriting, Fluency Lessons and the Daily Review to provide a robust classroom program. All parts of the program work together.
SPELL @ SPELD NSW Launch will be released during Term 4 2025 and the early part of 2026, ready for use in the 2026 school year!
🔹 Phonics: The Phonics lesson is fully scripted. Lessons begin with a Warm-Up reviewing recently learned content. Each lesson has a clear target focus and an I do / We do / You do structure. Students engage in guided practice during We do, then immediately consolidate using the low-variance readand- write sheet provided. Every lesson focuses on developing both decoding and encoding skills.
🔹 Daily Review: The Daily Review is a cornerstone of spaced practice. Students read and spell both regular and irregular words previously taught in earlier Sets. In the first three Sets, you’ll see frequent review of content from Sets 1–2—by design. At this early stage we are building new schemas, and frequent, spaced retrieval is essential. These routines are established early, and continue throughout SPELL@SPELD NSW Launch.
🔹 Fluency: The Fluency lesson mirrors the content of the Daily Review. Our goal is for students to gain the practice needed for automatic word reading (ie the ability to recognise regular and irregular words, on sight), which is the gateway to fluency. During Fluency, students engage in partner reading using the provided worksheet and decodable texts. We offer guidance—via our decodable book selectors—on which decodables align to the scope and sequence, and we encourage drawing on SPELD NSW Member resources for additional practice activities and games. The Fluency lesson is where reading confidence starts to flourish.
🔹 Handwriting: Handwriting is fundamental! Single letters are introduced alongside the Phonics instruction. On the same day students learn, for example, that ‘s’ represents /s/, they complete a focused Handwriting lesson practising ‘s’ in both lowercase and uppercase. Throughout the Handwriting sequence, there are many opportunities to revisit previously taught letters for repeated practice. The Handwriting program has 4 parts: Single Letters, Letter-formation Families, Word-level Handwriting, and Short Sentences and Conventions.
🔹 Timetabling: Launch is designed to give you both structure and some flexibility in terms of timetabling the lessons. Each day of the program has a Daily Review, a Phonics Lesson, a Handwriting Lesson, a Fluency Lesson and Stop! Let’s Read.
