Supporting children and adults with specific learning difficulties

Typing Programs

Free Typing Programs

Learning to type can be a very useful skill for students with spelling and written expression difficulties.  However, parents should be aware that some students may find it difficult.

Typing Club uses instructional videos to engage your child while teaching typing. TypingClub is available online and has voice options. Students gain stars and points to measure progress. Also available as a paid Pro version.

The program can be configured for speakers of British English.

Dance Mat is a UK-based program on the BBC website. The program uses colourful graphics, animals and voice overs to engage students while teaching touch typing.

Paid Typing Programs

Ages 6+

The program uses adventures exploring the Australian environment to progressively teach touch typing and keyboard skills. It uses adaptive learning, so each student is working on material that is appropriate for their ability.

Ages 7-12

Nessy program shave been developed to support students with literacy difficulties. Keys are introduced alphabetically to reduce confusion. Touch typing is taught as five different islands are explored. The child wins trophies and rewards along the way. The program allows words to be selected from different wordlists or you can create your own wordlists.

Ages 6 to adult.

The program uses a medieval environment to progressively teach touch typing and keyboard skills. The program uses adaptive learning, so each student is working on material that is appropriate for their ability.

While this program’s focus is typing, it also aims to assist with reading and spelling. Each level has an audio track to help your child hear the sound. There is also an option to remove the visuals, allowing the child to practise hearing the words as they type.

There are US and UK voice options. Using the US voice option will result in the student learning US spelling conventions. TTRS also has country specific subject courses.
