Audiobooks and stories are an accessible way for children with learning difficulties to enjoy reading, and develop listening skills, vocabulary and comprehension.
Local Library
FREE | Age: All ages
Most public libraries offer access to ebooks and audio books for free through through platforms like OverDrive or Libby. Simply use your library card to borrow and download titles to your computer or device.
If you are in NSW, you can also borrow from the Jill Sherlock Memorial Library.
FREE | Age: Kindergarten to Adult
As part of the services provided by Vision Australia, they have an online audio library. Australian residents with a print disability, including people with dyslexia, are eligible to join the Vision Australia Library. Services provided by the library:
- Decodable readers are available for loan to library members. Each set of books is accompanied by audio files on a pre-loaded Pathway Player, providing an additional sensory resource for readers to engage with the text.
- Many senior secondary school English texts are available as part of the Australian senior school English curriculum.
- Primary, secondary or tertiary students can request texts or class material to be produced in an accessible format if it is not currently available in the Library.
FREE | Age: Kindergarten to Year 3
Storyline Online is an award-winning children’s literacy website which streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations.
Each book includes supplemental curriculum developed by a credentialed elementary educator, aiming to strengthen comprehension and verbal and written skills for English-language learners.
Subscription | Age: 12 years old and under
Epic is an e-library that allows children to explore, learn and discover in a safe and secure environment. The content includes high-quality books, Read-to-Me and Follow-Along Word Highlighting books for pre-readers, audiobooks, educational videos, and fun and educational quizzes. Books can be downloaded and read offline via the mobile app.
FREE or Subscription | Age: Kids!
KidsPod is a free podcast app for kids that allows endless listening to all of the best kids podcasts. There is a paid version that provides handy features to enhance the user experience such as downloads for off-line listening, hand-curated KidsPod Editor’s Playlists, personal playlists, and a draw along mode.
