This series of webinars takes some big ideas and packages them up into digestible bite-sized sessions to help K-2 teachers and leaders take the next step in implementing evidence-based reading in their classrooms.  

Each session covers a specific topic and aims to give you practical solutions so you can walk into your classroom and implement the literacy instruction with confidence. Each webinar is designed to give you some takeaway resources, models, and ideas for how to best support your K-2 students.

We will help you think about the purpose of each lesson and what each lesson can look like in your classroom!  

Teaching New Sound-Spelling Correspondences 

In this short webinar, you will learn a very simple but effective way to introduce new sound-spelling correspondences to your students. How do we teach students voiced/unvoiced sounds? How do we ensure they are pronouncing the phonemes correctly? We will show you how to be direct, targeted, and student-centred using our simple ‘Learning a new GPC’ routine.

Every K-2 classroom needs an effective routine of how to decode, encode, and blend words. In this session, we show you a great way to help students understand the connection between sounds and letters and how to blend sounds to read words correctly and confidently. This session will help you ensure that there is no guesswork in word reading!  

The Phonics Lesson: I do, we do, you do  

This webinar examines the elements of a direct and explicit K-2 phonics lesson structure. You will receive a clear and effective model of instruction that will help you implement an ‘I do, we do, you do’ structure in your phonics and spelling lessons. We will discuss differentiation, what resources to use, and how to get all students actively engaged and learning how to read and spell!  

Irregular words: when words don’t play by the rules!  

In this webinar, we demystify irregular words. What are they exactly? When and how should we teach them? We will show you how to plan for your irregular word instruction and most importantly, how to teach and practice these tricky words! You will learn 2 simple routines and get some insights into some activities that will help with making these words stick in students’ long-term memory!

In this webinar, we consider what makes a decodable… decodable? We show you how to align texts to your scope and sequence and how to select decodable texts that are appropriate for the reader and differentiated for various levels. We will look at basic code and extended code examples and help you understand how to make the best choices for your readers.  

Planning for partner reading in K-2 

In this webinar, we introduce you to the ‘reading practice and fluency lesson’ which is a key part of the literacy block. We will examine how to plan for this lesson, how to select and use resources, and what partner reading can look like across K-2. We will show you a great example of warm-up slides you can use in this lesson and a routine to teach students for partner reading.
