SPELD NSW is excited to release our Years 1 and 2 Phonics and Morphology Scope and Sequence.
SPELD NSW has now released our Phonics and Morphology Scope and Sequence for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. These documents include the Phonic Knowledge, Fluency and Spelling Outcomes and Content from the new NSW Syllabus for English.
These documents support a structured and explicit approach to literacy instruction in the early years! The research tells us that early, explicit and structured phonics instruction is essential in teaching ALL students to read.
The Kindergarten Scope and Sequence has a focus on phonics for reading and spelling. It also includes some basis morphology and high frequency irregular and partially irregular words. This part of the Scope and Sequence covers the Basic Phonics Code and introduces commonly used graphemes from the Extended Code.
The Year One Scope and Sequence has a focus on spelling as well as reading. It addresses phonics from the Extended Phonics Code. This part of the Scope and Sequence incorporates phonics, spelling conventions and morphology in an integrated and systematic manner.
The Year Two Scope and Sequence has a focus on spelling. It uses a phonics framework to structure the spelling instruction and incorporates phonics, spelling choice and morphology and a wide range of vocabulary in an integrated and systematic manner.
These Scope and Sequence documents are freely available and can be adopted by schools to structure their phonics and morphology instruction or can be used as resources to support schools in the development of their own scope and sequence.
SPELD NSW is also releasing on the SPELD NSW Member Portal a growing library of resources to support instruction and student practice of the skills and knowledge covered by the SPELD NSW Phonics and Morphology Scope and Sequence. These are available for teachers, speech pathologists, tutors and schools to use with their students and in their classroom.
