Carina McSweeney - SPELD NSW

Supporting children and adults with specific learning difficulties

SPELD NSW Team

Carina McSweeney

BA, BEd (Primary), Grad Cert Special Ed. (Learning Difficulties)
Professional Learning Educator

With 20 years of teaching experience, including 10 years as a Learning Support Teacher/Coordinator across two schools, Carina has passionately advocated for more effective instruction for all children, in particular, to support those with learning difficulties and neurodivergence.

“Working closely with the students and their teachers in mainstream schools, it was alarmingly apparent to me that the way most schools had been teaching reading was just not working for so many children, and I wanted to help to make a difference. In my own schools, I advocated for the staff to learn more about effective literacy instruction and mentored those who were keen to learn more with me.”

With knowledge pursued through her own professional development and extra studies, Carina gained the confidence to lead professional learning in her schools and in the wider learning support networks on the topics of reading and dyslexia, understanding autism and other support needs.

In recent years, Carina has enjoyed working for MultiLit as a Trainer and Consultant, supporting schools and delivering the training workshops for teachers to implement the various MultiLit programs for intervention and whole class teaching.

She is thrilled to now be working with the SPELD NSW PL team, to contribute to the ongoing and important work that helps the schools, teachers and others who work so hard to improve outcomes for the young people they support.
