SPELD NSW offers professional learning, resources and support for classroom teachers, learning support teachers, aides and school leaders in all sectors of New South Wales schools.

Our professional learning calendar is designed for educators and professionals to help children with difficulties in reading, writing, maths and attention. Our workshops focus on evidence based literacy and numeracy instruction which can help all students in your classroom and practical skills you can use with your students everyday.

SPELD NSW provides professional learning for teachers, tutors, speech pathologists and psychologists. Our workshops focus on evidence-based literacy and numeracy instruction and best-practice approaches to teach and support students with specific learning difficulties like dyslexia. 

Literacy Essentials Online – Science of Reading Essentials

The contemporary understanding of how we learn to read is fascinating as much as it is insightful. This workshop introduces key concepts that all teachers need to understand about the science of reading including the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, Cognitive Load Theory and Working Memory, Phonology and Phonemic Awareness, the importance of retrieval and spaced practice and the cognitive model of how we learn to read.

Developing a strong vocabulary is essential if children are to become successful literacy learners. Word Aware is a whole school approach which promotes vocabulary development. It is an evidence-based program which provides a structured process to help support vocabulary enrichment in all students and particularly for students with special educational needs and children with English as a second language.

Teaching Reading in the Early Years – 3 Day Face-to-Face Workshop

In this course you will learn about the core elements of an evidence-based approach to early reading instruction. A key feature of this course is that participants are given activities and reflection tasks to implement in their own teaching context- ensuring that the learning is real-world, contextualised and tailored. The course is structured around the SPELD NSW framework: Understanding, Plan, Instruct, Practice, Assess (UPIPA).

SPELD School Essentials SeriesWe come to you - onsite workshops at your locationWe can visit your school to deliver professional learning to classroom teachers, learning support teams and school leaders. The School Essentials Series gives you an opportunity to offer professional learning to a large group of teachers, your whole school or region for maximum impact and cost effectiveness. Choose one workshop or book the full series. School Essentials Series Workshops sessions are 2- 3 hours. NESA Approved.

Schools can purchase resources through our online store or email us with your order. We will invoice your school for you to pay later. SPELD NSW members receive discounts on decodable readers and other resources.

Decodable Reader Classroom Packs and Reader DemonstrationsClassroom Packs of Decodable Readers are a great solution for Kindergarten to Year 2 classrooms and for teachers working to support struggling readers in Years 3 to 8. Classroom packs are a great way to help your students practise decoding and other phonics skills at their ability level.

If you are interested in purchasing decodable readers from us, SPELD NSW offers Zoom Decodable Reader Demonstrations multiple times each term. We are also happy to loan you a sample pack of decodable books to consider. Please contact us if you would like to participate in a Zoom Decodable Book Demonostration or would like us send you a sample pack of decodable books or a resource catalogues in the post.
