Macquarie University Children and Families Research Centre - free 10-week Literacy Tutoring Program

Published: 22/04/2013

Macquarie University Children and Families Research Centre, Institute of Early Childhood

The Children and Families Research Centre is offering places in a free 10-week Literacy Tutoring Program for children aged 8-15 who are in the full-time care of their grandparents and are experiencing diffculties in reading and/or spelling. We know that these children sometimes struggle with literacy and that professional tutoring can bring a financial burden to grandparents.

University student volunteers, trained and supervised by academic staff , will deliver the tutoring individually to each child, using research-based programs. These tutors will work in pairs with each child and will have passed a Working with Children Check.

NDIS is through Parliament

Published: 11/04/2013

On 21st March 2013 the NDIS was passed through Parliament.

Minister’s Message

"Today we can all celebrate the passage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill through Parliament.  This historic piece of legislation is the foundation for a truly national scheme
that will deliver meaningful change for thousands of people with disability across Australia.

The legislation also establishes the NDIS Launch Transition Agency as an independent body, to work with people with disability to identify their goals and aspirations, and provide them with the support they need to help them reach their full potential.

The passage of legislation enables the launch of the scheme in July this year, in South Australia, Tasmania, the Barwon region of Victoria and the Hunter in New South Wales.  The ACT launch will start in July 2014.

The NDIS will roll out in full across NSW by July 2018, providing care and support to around 140,000 NSW residents with disability, following the agreement of Australian and New South Wales governments in December last year.  We will continue to work with other state and territory governments toward agreement with them to roll out the scheme nationally.

Australians have been calling for this fundamental reform for a long time and we’ve heard their calls."
