Certificate Course for Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties


SPELD NSW Professional Development Program

NOTE: Enrolements close April 2012.

This SPELD NSW course has been designed for teachers of students who have learning difficulties, mainstream classroom teachers who wish to update their teaching skills and anyone wishing to become a SPELD NSW tutor. It will provide up-to-date, research-based information concerning the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills. The course will be run on 6 weekends between May 12th and August 26th, 2012.

The Teachers’ Course will examine the teaching of spelling, early reading, comprehension, written expression and numeracy to students who fail to learn from normal instructional techniques. Participants will analyse and evaluate research pertaining to spelling, reading and numeracy acquisition, apply the findings to the instructional needs of students, and examine and evaluate diagnostic and assessment tools, both formal and informal, in these curriculum areas.

Guest speakers will include expert specialists in educational psychology, speech therapy, optometry, occupational therapy and school counselling.

Participants will receive
· 6 books (one for each weekend)
· links to downloadable research papers
· a wide range of teaching materials/samples

· a certificate following successful completion of assignments and course
